Sweet home Alabama

We found the sun and perfect temperatures. Hanging out in Meaher State Park, small but nice clean park. We've lucked out and been able to get a few nights at various parks along the gulf. If we wanted to max out the two week limit at a state park we would have to reserve  much farther in advance. We like traveling better without reservations even if it doesn't get us into the best spot. It leaves us open to hidden gems on the road and not feeling pressured by a schedule!

My favorite times of the day, sunrise and sunset and we were blessed with perfect days for our arrival here.

Jan was trying to warm her hands up!

I tried to get Nellie out there but it didn't go so well!

I had an idea but then I forgot!

This park in Mobile has a slight squirrel problem, we watched a man sitting on a bench feeding at least 20. It looked so odd to see a flock of squirrels instead of the normal pigeons!

Swimming pool for all the squirrels!
Just a little beach time. Jake loved it!
Henri was bored!

We had our 2nd meal out, much better than the pizza the other day and we got to watch the sunset.

Toured another military museum, the USS Alabama battleship and USS Drum submarine.
Just incredible to see how these were built and what all went into them!

I can't imagine what it was like to sit in one of these guns trying to shoot down a plane that was trying to sink your ship!

Or the men running these cannons, shooting at something up to 22 miles away and they were not able to see anything!
The stairways are a bit steep!
That's a lot of ovens, fresh bread for 2500 sailors everyday!

Full machine shop, pipe fitting shops, blacksmith shops and every other kind of workshop you can think of!

USS Drum submarine.

Everything the battleship has but built into 1/4 of the space!

This was the best part of the whole day! In the last 45 minutes of the day we came upon this retired submarine sailor. He said he volunteers one day a week to polish tourists fingerprints off of all the parts, an endless job! We visited for 20 minutes, he retired after 28 years on 5 different subs. He said his sister lives by us in Hudson, Wi. , small world!
I think I could talk to him all day!
There is a lot going on in there!

Wow!

It was a good day!

Onto the next sunset!
Life is great!

  1. How to fun find something to chat with and hear their stories. The owl made sunshine come out of Nora’s eyeballs. ❤️
